Best Months to Visit Honduras

Honduras has a tropical climate. Most of the country’s central and southern parts are defined by two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season usually starts from November to April and the rainy season starts from May to October.

Nevertheless, in the northern parts, there is an area that has an equatorial climate which means there is rain throughout the year.

Visiting Honduras in June, July, and August: June experiences heavy rains and thunderstorms in the central and western regions. However, in Tegucigalpa and Kopan there are no more than 4 sunny days for the whole month. July also experiences rain most of the time, with the west and center of the country always being cloudy.

August is no exception when it comes to heavy rains with thunderstorms that last for 8 days on the islands to 20 days on the mainland. Also, August is the warmest month in Honduras at 27C / 80F.

Visiting Honduras in September, October, and November: Although it’s still a part of the rainy season, September experiences heavy rainfall half the month with the other half experiencing sunshine. October is similar to September with heavy rainfalls occurring more than 15 days out of the month.

Nonetheless, October is the rainiest month in Honduras. In November, you can experience great weather along the Pacific Coast, where the whole month is sunny and dry.

Visiting Honduras in December, January, and February: December is among one of the best months to enjoy the many beaches in Honduras. Additionally, January is equally pleasant along the Pacific Ocean with lots of sunshine although on the Caribbean coast rains occur.

Therefore, with the rain being common on the Caribbean coast, January is considered the coldest month in the country. However, by February, the rain subsides on the Caribbean coast and the water temperature rises to 27C / 80F.

Visiting Honduras in March, April, and May: March in Honduras is quite warm and dry especially along the northeast and southern coasts with only a maximum of 3 rainy days. Inside the country and its western part, the weather is still warm and dry.

However, the rain pours in these areas for longer days of 3 to 7 days. April is no exception when it comes to rain but near the Caribbean coast, the sun is always shining. However, in May, the real heat comes to the country as the rainy season kickoffs on most days of the month.

Low Season: The low season in Honduras starts from September to mid- November though it may extend through January. Although October is the wettest month, other months have sunny and dry days with hotel prices being lower in these months.

Off Peak Season: From May until November, this rainy season generally makes up the off-peak/ shoulder season. Flights and hotels are usually cheap at these times of the months.

High Season: October through February which is rainy on the north coast and islands but dry in Honduras’ interior. March and April is also high season as it is hot and dry everywhere in the country.

Best Months for Scuba Diving: April and May when the weather is warm and dry. Moreover, mid-February to April is the best months to spot whale sharks around Bay Islands.

Best Weather: The months of December through May have the best weather to visit Honduras. However, if you are going to the Caribbean coast or the island of Roata, the best months to travel is between March and May.

Best Month to Save Money: May to November which is basically the off-peak season. The months are great for traveling since the flights are cheap and hotels are less crowded while the weather is not too bad.

 

How to Get to Honduras

Honduras is easily reachable from other Central American Countries as well as the rest of the USA and Canada. With four international airports, the country is able to have frequent direct flights from USA destinations such as Miami, Houston, and Atlanta.

However, the best hub for tourism transportation is San Pedro Sula which has different bus companies that make getting around easy.

Plane

Internal flights in Honduras are relatively affordable and are managed by a small number of domestic airlines. The airlines mostly offer frequent departures between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula,La Ceiba, and the Bay Islands.

Taxis

Taxis are generally the safest way to travel around Honduras cities and big towns. Moreover, if you want to travel outside the city, you can still hire a taxi as you only need to negotiate the price upfront.

 

Tips for Traveling to the Honduras

  • Carry enough cash in case you struggle to find an ATM that accepts your card. Furthermore, you should also have some hundred dollars tucked away for an emergency because the ATM’s sometimes don’t work.
  • Honduras locals mostly struggle to get by. Therefore if you are enjoying a cheap meal, ensure you leave a more generous tip than normal. Also when in the market, buy your products from the local people rather than the big businesses.
  • Learn some basic words in Spanish. Although most tourist attraction areas have English speaking locals, it’s good to learn some basic Spanish.
